The Georgia-Pacific Foundation
funds programs in education that produce successful
transitions to the workforce and provide workers with
job readiness, including technology literacy, training
in technology applications and software, and technical
training programs.

Start Something Curriculum
for Schools

Sponsored by Target Stores & the Tiger Woods Foundation,
the Start Something curriculum is available online
and is designed for students to explore their goals
and help them build leadership, initiative and community
stewardship. The students can use technology to design
a portfolio of their work to show others to help young
people ages 8 to 17 identify their strengths. The
curriculum program takes 20 hours to complete and
can be done over any time period. Once students have
completed the program they can apply for a Start Something
scholarship ranging from $100 to $5,000. The student
can use the money as he or she pleases to pursue a
goal or dream. Scholarships are awarded three times
a year.

The Learning & Leadership program
will award approximately forty-five individual grants
of $1,000 and ten group grants for teams of two or
more people of $3,000. These NEA grants have traditionally
supported technology training for high-quality professional
development for public school teachers, public education
support personnel, and public higher education faculty
and staff. The purpose of the grant is to train leaders
who will guide their colleagues. Preference will be
given to members of the National Education Association.
Applications postmarked by October 15, 2003 will receive
a decision by February 28, 2004. Proposed activities
may begin no earlier than March 2004. |

Through the Handspring Foundation non profit organizations
that help at-risk youth may receive Handspring PDA
product and cash grants Cash grants from $1,000 to
$25,000 will fund projects that focus on high-risk
youth or preK-12 education. Product donations of Handspring's
Treo or Visor Deluxes are available for non profits
and overseas equivalents that can propose innovative
use of the products and technology. The foundation
is interested in programs that utilize arts, technology
or sports to serve children in foster care or juvenile
facilities, or school-based literacy, mentoring and
peer-counseling programs.directed toward school-based
literacy, mentoring or peer-counseling programs. The
Handspring Corporation also donates Handspring hand
held computers to outreach and education projects.
K-12 Schools need to apply through their educational
foundation or may partner with a 501c3 to receive
product donations or apply for one of these grants.
