program funds the preparation of Science, Technology
and Mathematics teachers and school and district administrators
to develop innovative curricula, materials, tools,
ideas, and information resources that will prepare
and support STM teachers and administrators. It will
fund research to develop and identify models, organizational
structures and systems that support the teacher professional
continuum in STM and to use scientifically-based studies
to research teacher learning throughout the teacher
professional continuum and its impact on teaching
practice. |

non profit organizations are eligible to apply for
funding for research into new technologies involving
people and society from the National Science Foundation’s
Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS)
Programs, NSF 01-156.
IIS also supports ithe Digital Library and STIMULATE
(Speech, Text, Image, and Multimedia Advanced Technology
Effort) Initiatives. Universal access to technologies;
human language technology; knowledge modeling; scientific
collaboratories; robotics; computer vision; data mining;
database access technology; human-computer interaction;
and embedded intelligent systems are appropriate topics
for study.

(DST) |

* Supports research for new knowledge about the
complex processes of adaptation and interchange
between society and new information technologies.
Universal participation in a digital society, large-scale
social technologies for science, education, and
work collaboration and learning, ethical principles
in technical design, information privacy and intellectual
property in a digital age, and technologies for
independence throughout life are appropriate topics
for study.

| Human Computer Interaction
|

(HCI) * Supports research for the design of systems
that mediate between computers and humans. Topics
include universal access; visualization; animation
and simulation; interactive computing; human language
technology, including speech recognition and natural
language understanding; posture and sound based interfaces;
virtual reality; and multimedia environments.
