AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIANS MAKES GRANTS, AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR 2007 INNOVATIVE LIBRARY PROGRAMS & PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

For 2007 $6 million is available in grants through the Rural Community Development Initiative. These grants will be made to qualified nonprofit organizations, low-income communities, or fed­ erally recognized tribes to develop their capacity and ability to undertake projects related to facilities including schools, libraries, childcare, hospitals, medical clinics, assisted living facilities, fire and rescue stations, police stations, community centers, public buildings and transportation. Technology infrastructure may be supported. The RCDI grant, which has a dollar-for-dollar matching funds requirement. The purpose of this initiative is to provide a program of technical assistance to recipients to develop or increase their capacity to undertake projects in the areas of housing, community facilities, and community and economic development in rural areas.

 
21ST CENTURY MUSEUM PROFESSIONALS OFFERS LEADERSHIP GRANT

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) recognizes the need for training and professional development for its professionals. Since 1980, IMLS has supported training activities, most recently through National Leadership Grants. IMLS will support professional training, leadership development, and strategic plan­ ning through the 21st Century Museum Professionals program. This program will support a variety of training and personnel devel­opment activities for staff members from all types of museums. Grants range from $15,000-$500,000 for up to three years. Grants will be announced in mid-September.

The 21st Century Museum Professionals program supports a range of activities, including professional training, leadership development, and strategic planning. For all types of museums, this program also supports the collection and dissemination of information to museum professionals and the public. Project design could include direct dissemination of information through workshops, seminars, and courses or indirect communication through publications and Web sites.

Applications are now available for the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) 2007 awards, grants and scholarship program, totaling up to $54,000.

» The AASL Collaborative School Library Media Award, spon­ sored by Sagebrush Corporation, recognizes and encourages collaboration in curriculum development between school library media specialists and teachers.
» AASL/Highsmith Research Grant, donated by Highsmith Inc., is awarded to conduct innovative research aimed at measuring and evaluating the impact of school library media programs on learning and education.
» The ABC-CLIO Leadership Grant, sponsored by ABC-CLIO, awards school library media associations that also are AASL affiliates, for planning and implementation of leadership programming at the local, state or regional level.
» The Distinguished School Administrators Award, sponsored by SIRS Publishing, is presented to a school administrator who has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to advancing the role of the school library media center.
» The Intellectual Freedom Award, also sponsored by SIRS Publishing, honors an individual who has upheld the principles of intellectual freedom.
» The Distinguished Service Award, donated by Baker & Taylor Books, recognizes a librarian who has made an outstanding contribution to school librarianship and school library development.
» The Frances Henne Award, donated by the Greenwood Publishing Group, is presented to a school library media specialist with five or less years in the library profession to attend an AASL National Conference or ALA Annual Conference for the first time.
» DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 2, 2007 The Information Technology Pathfinder Award recognizes school library media specialists with innovative approaches to information technology in the school library media center. The award, donated by the Follett Software Company, is given in two categories - elementary (K-6) and secondary (7-12).
» The School Librarian's Workshop Scholarship was increased to $3,000 by Library Learning Resources and is awarded to a full-time student preparing for a career as a school library media professional.
